Course Overview

In the dynamic realm of care, professionals face the challenging task of navigating complex cases and addressing the enduring impact of trauma. Social workers and counsellors, grappling with a surge in mental health cases, can discover valuable insights and skills derived from published research and extensive experience of others working with clients with complex trauma backgrounds. This course integrates different trauma-informed approaches, giving a comprehensive understanding and actionable strategies for effectively supporting clients who have experienced trauma.

This course provides an experiential learning journey into trauma-informed practices. You are invited to embark on an interactive and hands-on exploration of trauma-informed practices that will arm professionals with essential tools to effectively support individuals with adverse childhood experiences and complex trauma histories.

Upon completion of the course, participants will:

  • Enhance their capacity to engage with and support clients with complex trauma backgrounds.
  • Develop skills in forming safe and effective therapeutic relationships.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the impact of and symptoms from trauma.
  • Acquire practical tools for supporting clients in resourcing, build and self-regulation.
  • Elevate their overall effectiveness in assisting individuals with trauma histories.

This course is designed for care professionals, including Social Workers, Counsellors, Youth Workers and Psychologists working with complex cases or clients who have experienced traumatic stress. Those aspiring to provide trauma-sensitive care will also benefit from this course.

    • How trauma in real-life cases looks like?
    • Helping clients understand using relatable language.
  2. Safe Therapeutic Relationships
    • How care professionals can build genuine, compassionate relationships, while maintaining professional boundaries.
    • Building a safe space to heal trauma
    • Potential dangers and pitfalls
  3. How Trauma Impacts the Person: Neurobiological and Emotional
    • Understand trauma impacts on the mind and body, and how it disconnects individuals from the flow of life and the heart.
    • Develop useful ways for clients to manage triggers and maintain a safe therapeutic connection.
    • Effective approaches to help clients process and making sense of the impact of their traumatic experiences.
  4. Building Practical Resourcing and Regulation Techniques
    • Dysregulation: Symptoms and signs
    • Effective methods to help clients in self-regulation and resourcing.
    • The importance of session pacing and structuring in facilitation of client engagement and progress.

About the Trainer

Gwen Koh
Ms Gwen Koh is a well-regarded social service practitioner who has amassed more than 25 years of frontline and supervisory practice. She holds a Bachelor degree in Social Work from the National University of Singapore and a Masters degree in Social Work from Melbourne University, Australia. Gwen is a certified Trauma-Sensitive HeartMath® Practitioner, IoPT (Identity-oriented Psychotrauma Therapy), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) practitioner.Having rose up the ranks beginning as a Youth Worker, Gwen is well-acquainted with the structure and the challenges of the local social work scene. She is currently dividing her time running her own private practice as well as serving as the Principal Social Worker in a charity running residential care, fostering service, respite care, youth outreach, adventure therapy and clinical intervention where she supervises younger colleagues.Gwen has served and supported children, adolescents and adults through individual, group, couple/marital and systemic family interventions. Gwen is adept in experiential therapeutic work with clients especially in companioning with them to unravel their strengths and resources, thereby support them towards healing, transformation and growth. Her specialties include working with individuals in dealing with anxieties, trauma, major life transitions, grief and relational challenges.
